Triumph Speed 400 vs Triumph Scrambler 400 X: A Detailed Comparison

Triumph has two powerful motorcycles in the 400cc category: the Speed 400 and the Scrambler 400 X. Both bikes are the first motorcycles to be developed under the Bajaj-Triumph partnership. Now, Triumph is bringing the new version of the Scrambler 400 X to the market, and recently, the bike was spotted while spied testing. And, talking about the Speed 400, its updated version was launched in September of last year with new colour options and high-end tyres. While both bikes share the same engine, they have different specifications, features, and designs. Let’s compare them to help you pick the right one.

Both motorcycles use the same 398.15cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine that produces 39.5bhp of power at 8,000 rpm and 37.5 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm. They also come with a 6-speed gearbox. However, the Scrambler 400 X has an Assist and Slipper clutch, and the Speed 400 has a multi-plate slip clutch.

On city roads, the Speed 400 has a vibrant feel and is tuned for rapid acceleration and smooth city rides. However, with minor adjustments to better handle off-road situations, the Scrambler 400 X is designed for adventure riding in rough terrain.

In terms of specs, the Speed 400 features 43mm USD front forks and a monoshock rear suspension, making it perfect for smooth road rides. In contrast, the Scrambler 400 X gets a 150mm longer travel suspension at both ends, improving comfort on rough roads and trails.

Braking is still another important distinction. For increased stopping power, the Scrambler 400 X has a bigger 320mm front disc brake than the Speed 400, which has a 300mm front disc. Dual-channel ABS and a 230mm rear disc are features of both motorcycles, but the Scrambler lets you turn off the ABS for off-road riding.

The Speed 400 is excellent on both city and highway routes due to its 17-inch alloy wheels and road-focused tyres. With its 19-inch front wheel and dual-purpose tyres, the Scrambler 400 X offers more stability on uneven terrain.

The Scrambler 400 X, however, is all about adventure. It has a larger wheelbase for stability, hand guards for safety, and a broader handlebar for improved control. Additionally, you can confidently navigate off-road routes due to its switchable ABS.
