The Japanese brand, Suzuki Motorcycle India, Pvt Ltd (SMIL), owns the Indian division solely. It is the third Suzuki auto business in India after Maruti Suzuki (1982) and TVS Suzuki (1982–2001).

The joint venture between the Suzuki Motor Corporation and TVS Motor Company started in 1982 and began manufacturing two-wheelers in India.

When the business separated from TVS in 2001, it re-entered the market as Suzuki Motorcycle India Private Limited (SMIL) in 2006. The business has also set up a manufacturing factory in Gurgaon, Haryana.

Suzuki began its journey in the Indian scooter segment with the release of the Suzuki Access 125 in 2007. The sales were slow initially, but eventually, it gained huge popularity among the public. Then, the company released the Swish 125, which was more female-oriented in design and appearance, and Let's, a 110cc scooter. The Swish and Let's could never come near the level of success of the Access 125.
