Royal Enfield Scram 440

The Scram 440 is Royal Enfield's upgrade to the older Scram 411. While it may look quite similar on the outside, Royal Enfield has made some meaningful changes underneath. With a more refined engine, a 6-speed gearbox, and small but useful updates, the Scram 440 feels like a better all-rounder than before. 

We spent a few days with the bike, using it for office runs, weekend rides, and even some gentle off-roading. And honestly, it does a bit of everything with ease. But what stood out the most? Let’s know in detail. 

• The Scram 440 looks like the older version but gets new colour options and a cleaner design.
• It now has an LED headlight which looks sharp and helps better at night.
• The Force variant features alloy wheels with tubeless tyres, which are ideal for long rides and easier to repair in the event of a puncture.

• The Trail variant still has spoke wheels with tube tyres for that classic scrambler feel.
• The new colours like Force Blue and Trail Green make the bike look fresh and modern.
• The paint quality looks and feels premium. It has a smooth, glossy finish that’s easy to maintain.
• Most panels fit well, and there’s good attention to detail in the switchgear and tank design.

• Some areas like the welds on the swingarm and pillion footrest, need better finishing.
• It comes with a semi-digital console that shows speed, trip meters, gear position and fuel level. You can also get the Tripper Navigation pod as an optional extra, which is helpful on long rides.

• The sub-frame at the back is stronger now and can carry a small top box easily.

• The bigger 440cc engine is smoother and quieter than before. It doesn’t feel rough even at high revs.
• We really liked the pops and crackles from the exhaust. It gives the bike a fun character.

• The new 6-speed gearbox helps a lot on the highway. The engine feels relaxed even at 100-120 kmph.

• We cruised on an open stretch of road, and the engine didn’t feel stressed at all.
• The clutch is light, which makes it super convenient during slow city rides and heavy traffic.

• The gear shifts are precise but still have that slightly clunky feel, which could have been improved.
• We got a mileage of around 29.5 kmpl in the city, which is decent for a 440cc engine.
• On the highway, with steady cruising, you can expect it to go slightly higher. The 15-litre fuel tank gives a practical range of over 400 km on a full tank.

• In city traffic, the Scram 440 feels easy to handle. It doesn’t feel heavy while riding.
• We took it for a spin on twisty hill roads, and it handled corners with confidence.
• The suspension works well over bumps and rough patches. You barely feel small potholes.

• While riding on loose gravel and trails, the bike managed really well without slipping or struggling.
• It’s not meant for hardcore off-roading, but for weekend trail rides, it's just right.
• At high speeds, there’s a small weave or shake, but nothing dangerous or uncomfortable.
• The brakes are stronger now, with bigger pistons giving more stopping power.

• The riding position is upright and relaxed, which makes it good for daily commuting and longer trips.
• On our ride through the city, the seat felt well-padded and comfortable even after 2 hours of non-stop riding.
• The handlebars are wide enough, but a little more height or width could make it even better.
• While standing on the footpegs during off-road riding, we felt they could be placed slightly forward.
• The pillion seat is placed higher, but still comfy for short city rides.

• The rider’s seat is a bit scooped, which may cause you to slide forward during hard braking.
• The front disc brake now comes with bigger pistons, giving more bite and stopping power.
• During our emergency brake test, the front brake worked well but lacked a bit of lever feel.

• The rear brake is adequate and works best when used together with the front.
• Dual-channel ABS is standard and you can switch off the rear ABS for better control on loose surfaces.
• Tyres perform well in dry city conditions and light off-road trails, but are not meant for aggressive off-roading.

If you want a bike that’s easy in the city, fun on weekend trails, and calm on highways, the Scram 440 fits well. It may not have fancy features, but it gets the basics right. The engine, gearbox, and comfort are better than the old Scram 411.

The bike is priced between Rs. 2.08 lakh and Rs. 2.15 lakh (ex-showroom). It’s great for riders who want a tough and fun bike without requiring serious off-road ability or advanced features. If that sounds like you, the Scram 440 is worth checking out.
