KTM has officially confirmed the KTM RC 490, while the larger KTM RC 790 is also under development. The updates from KTM's latest future product plans give a clearer picture of what's coming next.

The RC 490 is expected to use a new India developed twin cylinder platform, while the RC 790 is likely to target global markets first. For Indian buyers, the RC 490 appears to have a stronger chance of arriving because of Bajaj Auto's role in developing and building the new platform.

KTM RC 490 officially confirmed

The KTM RC 490 will be based on KTM's upcoming twin cylinder platform being developed by Bajaj Auto in India. The motorcycle is expected to share its engine with future models such as the KTM 490 Duke and KTM 490 Adventure. Production is likely to take place at Bajaj's Chakan plant near Pune.

The new engine is expected to comply with Europe's A2 licence regulations, with power likely capped below 48 bhp. KTM is expected to showcase the new platform in 2027, followed by a global launch.

Alongside the RC 490, KTM is also developing the RC 790. Reports suggest it will be based on KTM's existing 790cc parallel twin platform rather than the upcoming India developed engine. The motorcycle is expected to target premium supersport buyers in international markets first.

There is no official confirmation about an India launch for the RC 790. However, KTM already sells premium motorcycles such as the 890 Duke R in several global markets, showing the brand's continued focus on higher capacity motorcycles.

Will these bikes come to India?

The RC 490 currently looks much more likely for India because:

  • It is being developed by Bajaj Auto in India.
  • Production is expected at the Chakan facility.
  • It is designed for global and emerging markets.
  • It could become a natural upgrade over the KTM RC 390.

The RC 790's India launch is uncertain. Its expected premium pricing may limit its appeal in the local market.

Rivals and what buyers should expect

If launched in India, the KTM RC 490 is expected to rival the Aprilia RS 457, Kawasaki Ninja 500, and the upcoming CFMOTO 450SR in global markets. Buyers looking beyond the KTM RC 390 can expect smoother twin cylinder performance, improved highway comfort, and stronger acceleration.

For riders planning to upgrade from the RC 390, waiting for the RC 490 could be worth it. It promises a larger engine, refined performance, and a new platform developed with India playing a key role.
