KTM 390 Duke: Why Young Riders Go Crazy for This Streetfighter Bike?

Looking for a motorcycle that feels sporty without crossing the Rs 3 lakh mark? The KTM 390 Duke is one option young riders can consider.

Priced at Rs. 2.84 Lakh (ex showroom) the KTM 390 Duke packs 40.93 bhp, a 5 inch TFT display and a quickshifter that lets you change gears without using the clutch. The manufacturer also raised prices by up to Rs. 7,000 On the 390 Duke and the KTM 390 Duke R.

The sharp sporty design of the KTM bike grabs attention, making it a popular choice among riders who want a bold looking motorcycle.

Why the 390 Duke Attracts Young Riders

KTM Duke 390

Power comes first. The 349.32 cc single cylinder engine makes 40.93 bhp (brake horsepower) at 8,600 rpm and 33.5 Nm of torque at 7,000 rpm. That output sits in a light package. The bike weighs 168.3 kg with fuel and fluids, called kerb weight, so it feels agile in traffic.

Looks do the rest. A split LED headlamp, an exposed trellis frame (the visible tubular skeleton) and an underbelly exhaust give it a sharp, street ready face.

The way you sit on the KTM bike is up, with a handlebar that is wide and footrests that are placed behind you, give it a more athletic look. People who have tested it say the position makes you feel in control but not so intense that it's uncomfortable for riding.

Here are the main KTM 390 Duke features:

  • Quickshifter+: Changes gears without the clutch lever while accelerating.
  • Rider aids: Traction control, launch control (for faster standing starts), cornering ABS and Supermoto ABS.
  • Throttle and modes: Ride by wire throttle, Street and Rain modes, and a Track screen with a larger rev counter and lap timer.
  • Display: 5 inch TFT screen with Bluetooth, navigation and phone pairing.
  • Crawl and cruise control: BikeJunction lists both, but KTM India's page does not.
  • Chassis: It gets Adjustable WP APEX suspension and a 320 mm front disc brake.

I find that ride modes change how the bike reacts to the throttle. Street mode is good for riding while Rain mode is good for slippery roads. These are also among the reasons youngsters love this bike.

Handling is another draw. The suspension changes at both ends, so riders can adjust it for the road. The front fork gives five click compression and rebound settings while the rear shock gives five rebound steps and ten preload steps.

Compression and rebound decide how the suspension takes a bump and settles after it. Preload sets the spring's starting tension.

Stopping power comes from a 320 mm front disc with a radial caliper and a 240 mm rear disc. Cornering ABS helps keep braking stable while the bike leans, and the review calls the brake feel confidence inspiring. The Apollo Alpha H1 tyres offer decent grip for city and highway riding, according to the review.

Three out of five owners specifically praise the Crawl feature. It lets the bike roll slowly in traffic without constant clutch pulling. Riders also mention strong braking when a car cuts in suddenly.

KTM 390 Duke specifications also play a role in everyday riding. Its 183 mm ground clearance helps deal with speed breakers and rough roads. The 1,354 mm wheelbase gives balance while the 800 mm seat height might feel high for riders.

It comes with tubeless tyres using a 110/70 17 front and 150/60 17 rear setup. These tyres provide better grip for city driving and long highway trips. The six speed gearbox helps riders handle traffic at speeds and travel easily on open roads.

During rides, the engine feels smoother, with less vibration at higher speeds. It performs best when revved hard. The top end feels fun once the tachometer (rev counter) goes past 7,000 rpm. Overtakes may need extra downshifts compared with the older 399 cc version.

The KTM 390 Duke price is Rs. 2.84 lakh (ex showroom). The on road price includes insurance, RTO (Regional Transport Office) fees and applicable city taxes. In Delhi, the bike costs around Rs. 3.09 lakh on road, while prices rise to Rs. 3.29 lakh in Mumbai and Rs. 3.31 lakh in Bengaluru.

KTM made no changes to the features or performance with the August price rise. The same hike also covered the 390 Duke R.

If you are buying this streetfighter bike on a loan, the lowest EMI starts at Rs. 5,185 a month. That assumes an Rs. 28,412 down payment, 8% interest and a five year loan.

KTM 390 Duke mileage is listed at 28 kmpl, and the 15 litre tank has a 3 litre reserve. At 28 kmpl, simple maths gives roughly 420 km from a full tank. The 390 Duke can reach a top speed of 160 kmph.

The bike is available in three colours: Atlantic Blue, Liquid Carbon and Gun Metal Grey.

How the Duke Stacks Up Against Rivals

390 Duke rivals sit in a similar price band, based on ex showroom figures.

Bajaj Pulsar NS400ZRs. 1.90 lakh 120 kmph176 kg12 L
TVS Apache RTR 310Rs. 2.23–2.90 lakh150 kmph169 kg11 L

The 390 Duke sits between the more affordable Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z and the pricier Aprilia Tuono 457. The TVS Apache RTR 310 also falls in a similar price range.

The Duke gets a 15 litre fuel tank, which is larger than those of the other bikes listed. Their weights are close, ranging from 169 kg to 176 kg. Top speeds and features vary, so compare these details before choosing a bike.

Who Should Buy It, and Who Should Wait?

Duke 390 Buying Guide

Budget for more than the sticker price. On road estimates cross Rs. 3 lakh in all major cities.

Fuel is a running cost to plan for. At 28 kmpl, the 12 litres above the reserve last about 336 km. Fuel cost per kilometre depends on local petrol prices, which the sources do not list.

Daily use is mostly easy. The 800 mm seat height suits many riders, while the bike is light enough to manoeuvre through traffic.

For first time big bike buyers, weight matters when moving slowly, especially in parking lots. The 168.3 kg kerb weight helps make the bike manageable at low speeds.

However, the seat may feel a little hard on longer rides. The suspension can also feel stiff over broken roads. Some online reviews mention tight ergonomics, which may not suit every rider.

The pillion seat is better than on older Dukes. However, there is no passenger backrest, which could be a downside on longer trips.

  • Buy if you want one bike for city commutes and weekend rides and can afford more than Rs. 3 lakh on road.
  • Buy if you value rider aids and technology over a plush ride.
  • Wait or test ride first if long highway touring or rough roads make up most of your riding.
  • Think twice if you want the sharper edge of the older 399 cc engine; the new motor is reported to be calmer.
  • New to powerful bikes? Test ride first and start in Rain mode, which manages power delivery for wet roads.

Conclusion

The 390 Duke earns its fans with strong performance, plenty of tech and sharp handling for under Rs. 3 lakh ex showroom. The trade offs are a firm ride, a calmer engine than before and an on road price above Rs. 3 lakh. Test ride it on your usual route before booking. Prices can change, so confirm the final figure with your dealer.
