Own a Non-E20 Royal Enfield Classic 350? What To Do Now For Smooth Riding In 2026

Are you also one of those who owns a 2023 bike model or an older one and is worried about the E20 policy mandate in the country? Thousands of bike owners, including those owning a Royal Enfield Classic 350, are anxious this month after petrol pumps switched entirely to E20 fuel on April 1, 2026.

One such rider, who bought a 2023 Classic 350 and believes it isn't E20-compliant, can't afford the newer 2026 model, which starts at Rs 1.87 lakh (ex-showroom), and wants to know what to do next.

Here's the lesser-known thing you need to be aware of: Most 2023 Classic 350 units sold in India already run the fuel-injected engine that Royal Enfield introduced in September 2021, and the company says its entire lineup has been E20-ready since the BS6 switch in 2020.

The bigger issue is the confusion surrounding the E20 policy, not the fuel itself. To avoid future panic, you, as a biker, need to know these important things, based on the manufacturer's statements.

Is Your 2023 Classic 350 Actually Non-Compliant?

Royal Enfield stopped selling the old carbureted Classic 350 years before 2023. If you bought your bike new in February 2023, then your bike surely comes with the fuel-injected J-platform version launched in November 2020.

According to the company, its entire portfolio has been E20-compliant since the BS6 implementation in 2020. That statement covers the:

The retrofit kit you may have read about is for a different group of bikes: the old carbureted BS3 and BS4 Bullet 350, Classic 350 and Thunderbird 350; motorcycles that mostly stopped rolling off the production line before 2020.

If your bike has fuel injection instead of a carburetor, that retrofit isn't meant for you and you likely don't need it.

How to Actually Confirm it?

Here are a few simple checks that you can do on your own:

CheckWhere to look
Fuel type stickerNear the fuel filler cap or inside the fuel lid
Owner's manualLook for "E20 compatible" or "ethanol blend" mention
Engine typeCarburetor: older design; fuel injector body near the airbox: new J-platform

If you're still unsure, call your nearest Royal Enfield service centre with your bike's VIN number. It may clear your confusion.

What Real Owners Are Actually Noticing

Riding forums and owner groups have reported a consistent, mild pattern since the April rollout: a mileage drop of roughly 3 to 10 percent, slightly harder cold starts in winter, and occasional hesitation on bikes that hadn't been serviced in a while.

None of this points to sudden engine failure. The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) has also clarified that manufacturers will honour warranties even on older vehicles run on E20, regardless of what the manual says. So, a warranty claim shouldn't be denied just because you're using E20.

Separately, government-backed ARAI and IOC testing over 100,000 km reportedly found no major engine damage from E20 use, though some environmental researchers have raised questions about emissions and testing conditions during peak summer heat.

For now, the issue remains unclear, and riders on social media platforms are looking for clear answers rather than just reassurance.

Do You Need the Retrofit Kit?

If your bike turns out to be the older carbureted type, Royal Enfield does sell a fix. Dealers offer a genuine E20-compatible carburettor assembly with ethanol-resistant O-rings, tubes and seals, priced around Rs 1,700 for BS4 bikes and Rs 3,000 to 4,000 for BS3 bikes.

Stock availability varies by dealership, so call ahead before visiting.

If your bike is fuel-injected, skip this step entirely. It isn't designed for your engine and won't fix anything that needs fixing.

Simple Steps to Protect Your Motorcycle Engine

Whether your bike is E20-ready or not, a few habits can help maintain the engine with ethanol-blended fuel:

  • Don't keep the tank near-empty or completely full for weeks at a stretch; ethanol pulls in moisture from the air, and that water can separate and settle at the bottom of the tank, causing rust.
  • Stick to your service schedule and check fuel lines and rubber seals at every visit.
  • If you're storing the bike for a long trip, consider using a fuel stabiliser.
  • Keep an eye on mileage and starting behaviour; a sudden, sharp change is worth a dealer visit, while a gradual 5-10 percent dip is expected and not alarming.

You May Not Need the 2026 Model

For most 2023 Classic 350 owners, the fear is bigger than the actual risk. If your bike has fuel injection, Royal Enfield's own statement puts it in the E20-compliant category already, and your warranty stays intact as per SIAM's clarification.

The upgrade to a 2026 model isn't a requirement that most riders in this situation need to budget for.

Confirm your engine type, follow the routine service schedule, and ride as usual, with a little more attention to how the bike starts and performs over the next few months.
