Big Relief for Bike Owners: Govt. Says No Plan to Raise Ethanol Blending in Petrol Beyond 20%

In a big update on E20 fuel, the government said there is no plan right now to push ethanol blending in petrol past the current 20 percent (E20) level. Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi gave this update in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha on Monday, July 20, in New Delhi.

He said any move higher will wait for detailed scientific studies and talks with automakers, oil marketing companies, and research bodies. For India's motorcycle and scooter owners, who are worried about a further hike hurting mileage or engine health, this means the fuel at the pump will stay the same for now.

‘Future Increase Would Need a Study,’ Says Suresh Gopi

Mr. Gopi told Parliament that no decision has been taken so far to raise the ethanol blend beyond E20. He added that any future increase would need a full technical study and stakeholder consultation before it moves ahead.

According to PIB, India hit the 20 percent blending target in the 2025-26 supply year, five years ahead of the original 2030 goal, up from roughly 1.53 percent in 2013-14.

No Proof of Widespread Engine Damage

A big worry among two-wheeler owners has been engine wear from ethanol-blended fuel. On this, Mr. Gopi said the government has not received any widespread or confirmed complaints from vehicle makers, auto associations, or consumer groups about engine failure, fuel pump trouble, corrosion, or water buildup linked to E20.

He noted that over 20 crore two-wheelers and more than 3 crore petrol cars, many built before E20 certification, have run on E15-plus and E19-E20 fuel for two and a half to three and a half years without verified proof of large-scale breakdowns.

Brands such as Hero, Yamaha, and Suzuki have already joined the E20 race. Hero HF Deluxe Flex Fuel, Suzuki Gixxer SF 250 Flex Fuel, and Yamaha FZ Blue Flex are already available in the market. 

What Does this Mean for Bike Owners?

• No fresh ethanol hike means no immediate change in the mileage drop riders have already adjusted to under E20.
• Older bikes not built for E20 don't face a tougher fuel mix anytime soon.
• Warranty claims on E20-compliant vehicles continue as before, per the minister's statement.
• Any future change will go through public and industry consultation first, giving owners advance notice rather than a sudden switch.

India's Ethanol Push Cuts Import Bill

The ethanol programme has saved the country close to Rs 1.97 lakh crore in foreign exchange and cut crude oil imports by nearly 316 lakh tonnes since 2014-15, the minister said. However, for now, the blend at your local pump isn't going up.
