Royal Enfield is all set to launch the new Himalayan 440 in India on September 4. The launch will take place at the Royal Enfield Himalayan Basecamp in Leh, Ladakh. Interestingly, the launch will also mark the tenth anniversary of the original Himalayan 411.
The new motorcycle will sit between the Scram 440 and Himalayan 450 in Royal Enfield's line-up. In addition, it will share several mechanical parts with the Scram 440. However, the Himalayan 440 will get changes that should make it more suitable for touring and off-road riding.
The new Royal Enfield Himalayan 440 will use the same 443cc, air/oil-cooled, single-cylinder LS440 engine as the Scram 440. This engine produces 25.4 bhp and 34 Nm of peak torque and works with a six-speed gearbox.
The engine offers strong torque at lower engine speeds. As a result, the Himalayan 440 should feel easy to ride on highways as well as on rough roads. Perhaps this engine will also suit riders who want a relaxed motorcycle for long-distance trips.
In addition, the strong low-end torque should help when riding on loose surfaces and steep trails. Therefore, the Himalayan 440 could offer a good balance between touring and off-road riding.
The Himalayan 440 is expected to use a steel frame with a telescopic front fork and monoshock at the rear. However, the biggest difference from the Scram 440 could come in the wheel setup.
The Royal Enfield motorcycle is expected to use a 21-inch front wheel. This larger wheel should help the bike handle broken roads, muddy trails and rocky paths more easily. Moreover, it could make the motorcycle more suitable for adventure riding in difficult areas.
The Himalayan 411 handled such conditions well, and the new 440 could offer a similar experience with more engine torque.
The new Himalayan 440 is expected to follow the design theme of the discontinued Himalayan 411. Therefore, it could have a simple and functional appearance instead of a sharp and aggressive design.
The overall design could also help the motorcycle handle minor falls during off-road riding. In addition, the functional bodywork should make it easier for riders to explore rough roads without worrying too much about small scratches or damage.
The adventure tourer bike will likely focus more on touring and adventure use rather than city riding. However, its engine and chassis should still make it suitable for everyday use.
Royal Enfield could price the new Himalayan 440 at around Rs. 2.50 lakh (ex-showroom). This pricing would place it between the Scram 440 and the more expensive Himalayan 450.
With its 443cc engine, 21-inch front wheel and adventure-focused setup, the Himalayan 440 could become an interesting option for riders looking for a touring motorcycle.
Overall, the Royal Enfield Himalayan 440 will bring a familiar Himalayan design with the more powerful 440cc engine. The September 4 launch should reveal its final price, features, and specifications. Until then, more details are expected to emerge closer to the launch.
