Nitin Gadkari Urges Strict Ban on 2-3 Wheelers on Delhi Expressways

Published at July 11, 2025 | By BikeJunction

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has urged Delhi Police to strictly enforce the ban on two‑ and three-wheelers entering high‑speed expressways in Delhi‑NCR. He also asked the Municipal Corporation to remove distracting hoardings along these stretches. Officials are stepping up enforcement due to accidents from unauthorised vehicles and unclear signs.

Why the Crackdown?

Mr Nitin Gadkari expressed concern over frequent violations by bikes and tempos on expressways like Badarpur, Delhi‑Meerut, UER‑II, Delhi‑Gurgaon, and Dwarka. Notifications banning these vehicles have been in place since 2021 or earlier, yet enforcement remained lax. The minister emphasised that only strict police action and constant vigilance can deter such dangerous behaviour.

Scary Data Highlights Risk

Data from June 21–23 showed over 1.7 lakh violations on the Dwarka and Delhi‑Gurgaon expressways. Worryingly, 63% of these were banned two‑ and three‑wheeler entries. Other violations included a lack of helmets or seatbelts. Authorities are deploying AI-powered cameras and real-time monitoring to issue e-challans to offending vehicles.

Road Safety and Smooth Traffic Flow

Gadkari noted that hoardings and unauthorised advertisements distract drivers and increase crash risks. He directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to immediately remove these distractions. He also said disciplined road behaviour is key to reducing crashes and ensuring smoother commutes for expressway users.

With clear bans already in place and traffic flows increasing, this heightened enforcement could significantly cut accidents and delays. Authorities insist that only regular policing, surveillance, and prompt action can ensure safer journeys on Delhi‑NCR’s major highways.
