India’s scooter market reached a new high in FY2026 with 8.1 million units sold. In addition, this marks an 18.5% growth over FY2025. The segment showed strong momentum throughout the year. Overall, two-wheeler sales stood at 21.70 million units. However, scooters played a major role in this growth.

Key highlights from FY2026:

  • Total scooter sales crossed 8,117,945 units
  • Monthly average sales reached over 676,000 units
  • Around 1,853 scooters sold daily

Perhaps rising rural demand and new model launches helped boost sales. In addition, electric scooters added strong volume.

GST Cuts & Festive Season Drive Demand Surge

Total scooter sales report

The GST 2.0 reform reduced scooter prices, which makes them more affordable. As a result, demand increased sharply. Sales improved after September 2025 when the new tax system began.

Key growth triggers include:

  • Lower prices due to GST changes
  • Strong festive demand in October
  • Higher rural and semi-urban demand

Interestingly, October saw record sales of 824,003 units. December also performed well despite being a slow month usually.

Honda Stays Ahead But Competition Rises

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India remained the top player with 3.16 million units sold. However, its market share dropped slightly to 39%. Competition increased across segments.

TVS Motor Company recorded strong growth and gained share. It sold 2.30 million units. In addition, TVS growth came from both petrol and electric scooters. Suzuki Motorcycle India sold over 1.15 million units. However, its share dipped slightly.

EV Players & New Growth Drivers Shine

Hero MotoCorp posted 46% growth with over 572,000 units sold. In addition, its Vida EV lineup saw strong demand growth. Ather Energy delivered impressive performance with 67% growth. Bajaj Auto crossed 300,000 EV sales for the first time. Meanwhile, India Yamaha Motor reported steady but slower growth.

Electric Scooters Gain Strong Market Share

Electric scooters contributed heavily to total growth in FY2026. Sales crossed 1.08 million units.

Key EV highlights:

  • EV share rose to 13%
  • TVS led with 34% share
  • Bajaj and Ather followed closely
  • Hero Vida gained strong traction

However, Japanese brands still have a limited EV presence.

Outlook for FY2027 Remains Positive

The scooter segment shows strong potential for future growth. However, fuel price trends may impact buyer decisions. In addition, EV adoption could increase further in the coming year. Perhaps the industry may cross 9 million units in FY2027. For now, growth momentum remains strong.
