Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India has struggled to gain momentum in India’s electric scooter market. Since February 2025, the company has produced 11,168 electric scooters. However, it has delivered only 3,723 units to customers. Because many scooters still remain unsold at dealerships, the company has not produced its electric models for the last six months.
Data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers shows that Honda dispatched 5,445 scooters to dealers in the past year. This gap between dispatch and retail sales suggests weak customer demand. Perhaps buyers still prefer brands that already offer wider charging access and proven electric models.

Honda currently sells two electric scooters: the Activa e and the QC1. The QC1 accounts for most sales. One key reason is convenience. Riders can charge the QC1 at home, which many urban users prefer.
However, the Activa e depends on battery-swapping stations. These stations operate mainly in cities such as Bengaluru, Delhi, and Mumbai. Because the swapping network remains limited, customers in other cities may hesitate to buy it. Even though swapping takes only a couple of minutes, availability still matters more for daily riders.

In the meantime, the competition from Honda is gaining ground. TVS Motor Company, Bajaj Auto, and Hero MotoCorp are some of the companies that show high demand in their electric scooters. Their expanded dealer systems, payment plans, and pricing policies seem to appeal to more customers.
Japanese competitors have started to enter the space as well. On the other hand, Yamaha Motor has entered the market recently, with Suzuki Motorcycle India launching its electric scooter. This is increased competition that is making the market tougher for Honda.
Honda is a petrol scooter market leader despite the slow EV response. The company has sold more than 2.5 million scooters within the initial ten months of FY2026 and has a market share of approximately 39%. This solid foundation provides the company with room in which to polish its electric strategy.
