Centre Unveils PM RAHAT Scheme Offering 1.5 Lakh Cashless Treatment for Crash Victims

The Government of India has launched the PM RAHAT road safety scheme nationwide. The programme promises faster hospital admission for people injured in road accidents. Each eligible victim can receive cashless treatment worth up to Rs 1.5 lakh. This coverage remains valid for seven days after the accident.

Officials hope to cut deaths linked to delayed hospital admission after accidents. Doctors often highlight the first hour as the most critical period. This window, called the golden hour, can decide survival outcomes. Quick treatment during this time can save many lives. However, payment worries still slow admissions in several hospitals. The new scheme tries to remove that financial barrier.

Emergency Helpline & Citizen Helpers

The plan uses the national 112 helpline for emergency coordination. This number operates under the Emergency Response Support System network. Callers can request ambulances, share precise locations, and receive directions to empanelled hospitals. The system also alerts police and emergency teams simultaneously.

The scheme also supports bystanders who help injured victims. These helpers receive the title “Rah-Veer” under the programme. This recognition aims to reduce fear of legal trouble. Perhaps more citizens may assist victims with this protection. In addition, authorities plan awareness drives to inform the public.

Digital Links Between Ministries

The programme links hospital, police, and insurance data through one digital network. It pulls crash reports from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways system and connects with payment platforms run by the National Health Authority. This setup allows faster verification and claim processing.

Hospitals receive payments from the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund after approval. Insurance pays in insured cases, while the government covers hit-and-run incidents. Authorities aim to settle claims within ten days, encouraging wider hospital participation.

Local Readiness and Awareness

The scheme brings transport, health, police, and insurance teams onto one platform. This teamwork could speed up emergency response in many districts. However, rollout may differ across states at first. Some hospitals may adjust faster, while others need time. Awareness and training will likely decide how well it works early on.
