Bajaj to Start 2026 with a More Affordable Chetak Electric Scooter

Bajaj Auto is gearing up to begin 2026 on an exciting note. According to industry buzz, the company is likely to launch a new and more affordable version of the Chetak electric scooter around mid-January. This upcoming model is expected to sit below the current Chetak range and focus strongly on value for money. In many ways, it could be Bajaj’s direct response to budget-friendly electric scooters like the TVS Orbiter.

New Entry in the Chetak Lineup

The new Chetak will not replace the existing models. Instead, it will expand the lineup by offering a simpler and cheaper option. Bajaj seems keen on reaching more buyers who want to switch to electric mobility without spending too much. Earlier test sightings from October already hinted at this strategy, and now the launch timeline appears to be getting clearer.

In addition, Bajaj’s strong experience in building cost-effective products gives confidence that this scooter will balance price and usability quite well.

What to Expect from the Upcoming Chetak

To keep costs low, Bajaj is expected to use simpler components. These may include a hub-mounted motor, telescopic front forks, and twin rear shock absorbers. The battery is likely to be placed on the floorboard, which could help maintain balance and improve everyday usability. Perhaps the most important detail is the expected riding range, which could be around 100 km on a full charge.

However, underseat storage might be slightly reduced due to the new battery layout. Bajaj may also use lighter fibre panels instead of a full metal body to reduce weight and improve efficiency.

Familiar Design with Small Changes

The scooter will retain the retro style that defines the Chetak, albeit with a few updates. Possible changes include new side panels, a fresh seat, updated grab rails, and moved indicators. The console could be simpler with fewer digital features to make it easy to use.

Expected Price and Competition

Today, the Chetak range starts at around Rs 1 lakh ex-showroom. The new one could be nearer to Rs 80,000. At this price, it will automatically become a very strong competitor against the likes of the TVS Orbiter and models like the Hero Vida VX2. Overall, this new Chetak will help Bajaj grow its position in the fast-growing electric scooter market.
