Yamaha's First Electric Scooter in India Spotted Testing

Yamaha’s very first electric scooter for India has been spotted on the roads for the first time. This upcoming e-scooter is based on the River Indie but gets a fresh new design. Yamaha is entering the Indian EV market a bit late, but it’s coming prepared. Along with the Bengaluru-based startup River, Yamaha is building an electric scooter suited for Indian roads. The spied model, codenamed RY01, looks promising and is expected to launch later this year.

Bold New Design with Familiar Heart

Yamaha’s e-scooter is based on the River Indie platform but looks very different. It has vertically stacked twin LED headlamps instead of the Indie’s horizontal lights. The front apron is completely redesigned and now looks more upright and sleek. The rear section is slimmer, with a new tail-lamp and a different grab rail. Even though the frame and wheels look similar, Yamaha has clearly added its own style.

Moreover, the new scooter may offer a more traditional maxi-scooter design over the Indie’s SUV-like look. It appears Yamaha has removed the Indie’s side luggage mounting bars for a cleaner side panel. The design tweaks help the scooter look more premium and urban.

Same Strong Motor, Reliable Battery

The Yamaha version is expected to use the same motor and battery as the River Indie.
It will likely have a 6.7kW motor paired with a 4kWh lithium-ion battery pack. This setup allows a top speed of 90 km/h and a peak torque of 26Nm. The claimed range is 161 km, though real-world range is around 100 km in Eco mode.

Furthermore, users will get three riding modes: Eco, Ride, and Rush for better control. It can go from 0 to 40 kmph in just 3.7 seconds, which is quick for a city scooter. You can expect the scooter to handle steep roads well due to its 18-degree climbing ability. It also supports fast charging and takes about 5 hours to reach 80% charge.

Expected Price, Launch, and Competition

The River Indie is priced at Rs 1.44 lakh (ex-showroom), and Yamaha’s scooter might be slightly higher. Reports suggest a price around Rs 1.6 lakh, considering Yamaha’s brand value and new design. The official launch could happen later this year, possibly during the Bharat Mobility Expo 2027. Moreover, Yamaha’s scooter will compete with the likes of Ola S1 Pro, Ather 450X, and TVS iQube.
