Royal Enfield Sherpa FT Mk2 Set for 2026 FIM Flat Track Championship Debut

Royal Enfield Sherpa FT Mk2 Set for 2026 FIM Flat Track Championship Debut

Royal Enfield will officially enter the 2026 FIM Flat Track World Championship with the new Royal Enfield Sherpa FT Mk2. The motorcycle marks another major step in the company’s growing motorsport ambitions. The Sherpa FT Mk2 will make its first appearance at Roden, Netherlands, on 9 May 2026.

In addition, experienced flat track racer Gary Birtwistle will ride the motorcycle during the championship. Gary Birtwistle is also the founder of Dirt Craft race school. Moreover, he holds two national flat track championship titles. Interestingly, Royal Enfield described the Sherpa FT Mk2 as a “soon-to-be-launched” motorcycle.

Sherpa Engine Platform Could Receive Performance Upgrades

Royal Enfield has not revealed complete engine specifications yet. However, the Sherpa name already connects closely with the 452cc liquid-cooled engine used in the Himalayan 450 and Guerrilla 450.

That engine currently produces 39 bhp and 40 Nm torque in standard form. Perhaps the race motorcycle may receive performance upgrades for competition use. Flat track racing demands strong low-end and mid-range power delivery. Therefore, the single-cylinder engine setup suits this racing format perfectly.

Unlike multi-cylinder motorcycles, single-cylinder engines provide direct throttle response and easier rear-wheel control. In addition, riders can manage slide angles and traction more effectively on dirt surfaces.

Championship Expansion Makes Competition More Challenging

Royal Enfield’s entry into the FIM Flat Track World Championship comes at an interesting time. The championship itself has expanded significantly for the 2026 season. Earlier, the series featured six rounds only. However, the championship now includes ten rounds across eight countries and two continents.

Royal Enfield bikes already enjoy a strong reputation for durable engines and adventure motorcycles. Now, the company will test its engineering capabilities in a completely different environment.

In addition, the flat track championship may help Royal Enfield improve future performance-focused motorcycles. Motorsport often helps brands develop better engines, electronics, and chassis tuning.

The Sherpa FT Mk2 also highlights Royal Enfield’s increasing interest in global racing activities. Over recent years, the company has expanded beyond traditional retro motorcycles aggressively.
