KTM has been testing new twin-cylinder motorcycles in Europe, & these test models have caught everyone’s attention. Moreover, the design and engine details suggest KTM is planning something big for its middleweight lineup. While the final name is still uncertain, these bikes could mark the start of a new chapter for KTM fans.

At first, many thought the spotted bikes could be part of the rumoured 490 lineup. However, a closer look shows features that point towards the next-generation 790 range. One of the interesting parts is that these bikes were seen with simpler hardware, like a single front disc & a basic suspension setup.
This suggests KTM may be working on a more affordable platform, instead of replacing the current high-performance 790 Duke, RC, or Adventure.
Perhaps the biggest hint is KTM’s focus on the popular 650–750cc category. This segment already has strong players like the Kawasaki Ninja 650, Yamaha MT-07, Triumph Trident 660, and Kawasaki Versys 650.
By launching a new twin-cylinder engine, KTM could directly compete with these bikes. Thus, it may also offer different body styles like naked, supersport, & adventure versions to attract riders.
Why Replace the 690?
Another strong theory is that KTM could be preparing to replace the single-cylinder 690 series. With strict emission rules coming in, single-cylinder engines face challenges in meeting the new norms. In addition, a twin-cylinder motor provides smoother performance, more refinement, & a better riding experience.
KTM might brand this platform as a 790, even though it could be a replacement for the 690. The reason could be that increasing engine size is the easiest way to meet emission norms while keeping performance intact.
Other brands have already done this, and KTM has followed the same route with bigger bikes like the 890 and 990. Marketing the new lineup as 790 models may also help KTM position them strongly in the middleweight market.
Judging by the test mules, the bikes seem to be in the early stages of testing. They still carry temporary body panels and unfinished chassis components. However, a global reveal could happen at EICMA 2026, with sales beginning in early 2027.
However, these bikes may not launch in India, KTM and Bajaj are already working on another twin-cylinder platform specially for the Indian market.
