KTM 490 Adventure has surfaced in fresh spy shots during overseas testing. Earlier, test mules of the upcoming KTM 490 Duke also appeared online. Both motorcycles seem to use a completely new parallel twin-cylinder engine platform.

KTM has not confirmed the motorcycle officially yet. However, reports suggest this platform could replace the company’s older 690 single-cylinder lineup in global markets. The latest spy images show the 490 Adventure in an early development stage. Testing equipment and temporary body parts appear across the motorcycle. Even then, the bike already shows strong adventure-focused styling and proportions.

Familiar KTM Styling With Adventure-Focused Hardware

The upcoming 490 Adventure carries design inspiration from the current KTM 390 Adventure. The front section looks sharp and upright, while the fuel tank appears muscular and wide. In addition, the motorcycle gets a tall stance for better touring comfort.

The test mule uses long-travel WP upside-down front forks and a rear monoshock setup. These components should improve off-road capability and highway stability. KTM also seems to use a newly designed swingarm, which looks different from the current 390 platform.

The motorcycle gets disc brakes at both ends with WP brake hardware. Moreover, KTM may add advanced rider aids and electronic features in the final version. Spy shots also reveal a TFT instrument console similar to the unit seen on the 390 Adventure.

New Parallel Twin Engine Could Produce Up To 65 BHP

The biggest highlight remains the new parallel twin-cylinder engine. Reports suggest the engine displacement could stay around 490cc. However, KTM has not confirmed the exact capacity yet.

This new motor may produce around 60 bhp to 65 bhp. As a result, the upcoming Adventure could deliver stronger highway performance than current single-cylinder models. In addition, the engine may offer smoother power delivery during long-distance rides.

Unlike KTM’s 390 range, this motorcycle uses a conventional side-mounted exhaust system. The current 390 motorcycles use an underbelly exhaust setup instead.

More 490 Models Could Arrive in the Future

KTM may build several motorcycles on this new platform. Expected models include the 490 Duke, 490 RC and perhaps even Enduro and SMC variants. This strategy could help KTM strengthen its middleweight lineup globally.

However, reports indicate this platform may stay limited to international markets. India could receive a separate twin-cylinder lineup under 500cc in the future. The final production model may arrive in 2027 with updated styling, better electronics and stronger touring capability. Until then, KTM fans can expect more advanced test mules in the coming months.
