Yamaha may launch the all-new Yamaha R2 in India on August 27, 2026. Although the company has not officially confirmed the motorcycle, recent reports and Yamaha's media invite for the same date suggest that the launch could happen soon. The new sports bike is expected to fill the gap between the popular R15 and the R3. In addition, Yamaha is likely to manufacture the bike at its Chennai plant, making it more affordable for Indian buyers.
The upcoming Yamaha R2 is expected to share its platform with the Yamaha R15 V4. It could use the same Deltabox frame, which is known for offering excellent handling and stability. Furthermore, the motorcycle may feature USD front forks, a linked-type rear monoshock, disc brakes at both ends, and dual-channel ABS.
Among the upcoming Yamaha Bikes, the R2 is likely to offer several premium features. These may include Variable Valve Actuation (VVA), traction control, an assist and slipper clutch, and perhaps a bi-directional quick shifter. Safety features could also include a side-stand engine cut-off system and a wider rear tyre for better grip.
Yamaha has not revealed the engine specifications yet. However, reports suggest that the R2 could use a larger version of the existing 155cc single-cylinder engine found in the R15. The expected output is around 25 PS of power and 20 Nm of torque, making it a strong performer in its segment.
In addition, the motorcycle is expected to feature a full digital TFT instrument console with Y-Connect smartphone connectivity. Riders may receive call, SMS, and email alerts, while the system could also display fuel consumption, maintenance reminders, riding statistics, phone battery status, and the last parked location.
Once launched, the Yamaha R2 is expected to compete directly with the KTM RC 200, Hero Karizma XMR 210, and Bajaj Pulsar RS 200. Thanks to local manufacturing, Yamaha could price the R2 competitively, making it an attractive option for sports bike enthusiasts.
Overall, the Yamaha R2 looks promising with its sporty design, premium features, and expected performance. However, buyers will have to wait for Yamaha's official announcement to know the final specifications and price.
