India’s road to clean, cost-effective mobility is speeding up, with electric two-wheelers becoming the most affordable ride on the road. A new report by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) shows that riding an electric two-wheeler costs only Rs. 1.48 per km, compared to Rs. 2.46/km for petrol two-wheelers. This difference may seem small, but over time, it saves thousands of rupees for regular riders like students, city workers, and delivery agents.

The report also estimates that India will have more than 350 million two-wheelers on its roads by 2050. That would make up almost 70% of all vehicles in the country. These projections are based on population and GDP growth trends. States like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat are going to lead in vehicle numbers, due to high demand and rising income levels.
Cities such as Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi, and Ahmedabad—where traffic is heavy stand to gain the most from a shift to electric vehicles. EVs not only reduce fuel bills but also help cut air pollution and traffic noise.

The study highlights that electric vehicles save more than just fuel. They also have lower maintenance costs and longer lifespans. Govt support through incentives like the PM E-Drive Scheme is also helping make Electric vehicles more attractive. In states with strong EV policies, electric two-wheelers, taxis, and even private cars are already cost-effective.
To help more people adopt EVs, CEEW suggests three key steps. First, build more electric vehicle charging stations, especially in cities and nearby areas. Second, improve loan and financing options like EMIs and battery rentals. Third, use better data tools like the VAHAN portal to make stronger policies.
India’s transport sector is currently facing major challenges, including energy use, congestion, and pollution. As per Dr. Himani Jain from CEEW, the country now needs transport that is walkable, efficient, and low on emissions. With lower costs and more support, electric two-wheelers may lead the way.
EVs are no longer just about technology or trend they are becoming the practical option for most Indian families.
