Upcoming Yamaha’s MT-09 with Automatic Gear Box on the Horizon

The upcoming Yamaha MT-09 is generating excitement for its automatic gearbox integration, marking a potential addition to a new sportbike. These improvements could redefine the rider experience, make for easier gear changes and give access to more motorcycles. Yamaha’s move reflects a growing trend in the motorcycle industry towards adaptive technology, which aims to blend performance with ease of use.

About a month ago, Yamaha joined the automatic gearbox trend by revealing its first AMT setup for motorcycles. The concept video revealed key insights into how the automatic transmission works. Now, the Japanese manufacturer has proposed packing it in the much-awaited MT-09, possibly the first model to come up with this new feature. There is also a guess that the Tracer 9 GT+ will soon adopt this technology as well.

Gear Innovation: Setup and the Future

The teaser image reveals the MT-09 without a clutch, with a new switch cube setup similar to Yamaha’s recent AMT debut last month. This setup includes see-saw shift levers on the left side for manual gear changes using the thumb and index finger. Moreover, there is a dedicated mode switch on the right hand side between D+ and D modes. The D+ enhances sporty riding by enabling higher revs and manual shifts, while the D mode offers smooth gear shifts for urban transportation.    
 

The lightweight Yamaha AMT system, which weighs just 2.8kg, is set to be integrated into several models in Yamaha’s lineup. Hopes are high for the 2025 Yamaha MT-09, which will debut the AMT system after a recent teaser release.    
 

Nevertheless, motorcycle manufacturers are adopting AMT technology, which is gaining profit. Honda has already equipped models like the Africa Twin with DCT, while KTM has introduced its AMT for its upcoming Super Adventure model. Similarly, BMW has also announced AMT technology for its 1300 range, gesturing its development of automatic transmission solutions in the motorcycle industry.
