Riding a Bike in Heavy Rain or During the Monsoon? 10 Mistakes That Can Lead to Crash

Millions of Indian motorcycle and scooter riders face monsoon riding risks every single day. Wet roads, hidden potholes, and low visibility make July and August the toughest riding months across Indian cities. Riders on Honda, TVS, Bajaj, Suzuki, Hero, and Royal Enfield bikes face the same dangers on flooded streets.

Skipping basic checks or riding out of habit can turn a routine commute into a crash. Here are the 10 monsoon riding mistakes that put riders at real risk and how to avoid each one this season.

Here are 10 Common Mistakes that Riders often Make:

1. Skipping a Pre Monsoon Service

Worn brake pads, loose chains, old engine oil, and leaking fork seals become more dangerous in wet conditions. A basic service before the monsoon can prevent many breakdowns and accidents.

2. Riding on Worn Out Tyres

Tyres with low tread cannot disperse water properly, increasing the risk of skidding. Replace tyres that are badly worn before the rainy season begins.

3. Ignoring Lights and the Horn

Heavy rain can significantly reduce visibility. Weak headlights, faulty brake lights, or non-working indicators make it harder for other road users to see your vehicle. Also, slow down and stay alert at blind turns, as the sound of approaching horns may be your only warning of oncoming traffic.

4. Wearing the Wrong Riding Gear

Riding in regular clothes or slippers reduces control and protection. Wear a proper helmet, a waterproof jacket, gloves, and riding boots with good grip.

5. Riding with a Foggy Visor

A fogged-up visor limits visibility and increases reaction time. Use an anti-fog visor, a Pinlock insert, or slightly open the visor when it is safe to do so.

6. Braking Suddenly on Wet Roads

Hard braking on slippery roads can lock the wheels and cause the bike to skid. Apply both brakes progressively and use engine braking whenever possible.

7. Speeding Through Waterlogged Roads

Flooded roads may hide deep potholes, open drains, or damaged surfaces. Slow down and avoid riding through water if you cannot judge its depth.

8. Leaning Too Much While Cornering

Wet roads offer less grip than dry roads. Enter corners at lower speeds and avoid sudden steering inputs or aggressive lean angles.

9. Following Vehicles Too Closely

Stopping distances increase significantly on wet roads. Maintain at least a 4 to 6 second following distance from the vehicle ahead.

10. Making Sudden Throttle or Lane Changes

Rapid acceleration, abrupt lane changes, and quick steering inputs can upset the bike's balance on slippery roads. Ride smoothly and make every input gradual.

Be Smart While Riding

These aren't small slip-ups. Each mistake directly increases your crash risk in the rain, whether you ride a Hero, Honda, Bajaj, Suzuki, Yamaha, KTM, or TVS bike. A single new tyre costs far less than a hospital bill, and a pre-monsoon service typically costs only a few hundred rupees. Compare that to the repair costs after a bad skid or crash.

Monsoon riding doesn't have to be dangerous or stressful. Most crashes occur because of one of these ten mistakes.
