Honda Air Blade Patent Hints at New 160cc Maxi-Scooter for India

Honda has patented the design of the Honda Air Blade in India. This development has sparked fresh discussions about Honda’s future plans for sporty scooters. The Air Blade already sells in several international markets with 125cc and 160cc engine choices. However, Honda has not confirmed any India launch officially yet.

The patent filing arrived shortly after Honda patented the WN7 electric motorcycle in India. Perhaps, this move shows the company’s growing focus on expanding its premium product lineup. Unlike the WN7, the Air Blade appears more suitable for Indian buyers currently. In addition, demand for sporty maxi-style scooters has increased steadily in recent years.

At present, the segment has limited competition in India. The Yamaha Aerox 155 and Hero Xoom 160 remain the main rivals in this category.

Honda Air Blade 160 Could Become a Strong Rival

If Honda launches the Air Blade in India, the 160cc version may make more sense. The larger engine model fits better against current competitors in the market. Globally, the Air Blade 160 uses a 157cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine. This motor produces 14.7 bhp and 14.8 Nm torque for strong city performance.

The scooter weighs only 113kg and carries a 4.4-litre fuel tank. Therefore, the lightweight setup may help improve agility and fuel efficiency together. Interestingly, the Air Blade weighs less than both the Hero Xoom 160 and Yamaha Aerox 155. However, Honda uses narrower tyres compared to its rivals.

The scooter rides on 14-inch wheels and uses telescopic front suspension with twin rear shock absorbers. In addition, the seat height stands at 775mm for easier accessibility.

Patent Filing Does Not Confirm Immediate Launch

Honda currently holds the patent mainly for intellectual property protection purposes. Therefore, the filing alone does not guarantee an immediate launch in India. However, the Air Blade could fill an important gap in Honda scooter portfolio. The company currently lacks a sporty 150cc-plus maxi-scooter in India.

The smaller Air Blade 125 uses a 124.8cc liquid-cooled engine producing 11.8 bhp and 11.3 Nm torque. Perhaps, this version may suit buyers wanting a lighter urban scooter. Still, the 160cc version appears more suitable for Indian market trends currently. Overall, the Air Blade could strengthen Honda’s position in the growing premium scooter segment.
