India’s electric two-wheeler market recorded a sharp monthly decline during April 2026 after strong March sales. FADA data showed retail registrations reached 1,48,740 units during April, marking a 22.15% fall from March figures. However, yearly demand remained strong as sales increased 60.73% against April 2025 numbers. The dealers & manufacturers continued witnessing higher customer interest despite slower activity after the financial year ended. The electric two-wheeler market also maintained higher penetration compared to last year, showing continued expansion across several Indian regions.

April 2026 EV Sales Drop After March Peak

Electric two-wheeler retail registrations stood at 1,48,740 units during April 2026 across Indian markets. March 2026 registrations had reached 1,91,067 units before demand slowed during the new financial year.

Industry trends usually show higher March registrations because dealers clear stock before yearly accounting closes. April generally records softer demand because buyers delay purchases after March discounts and promotional schemes end.

Still, yearly growth remained strong because April 2025 sales had reached only 92,538 units nationwide. FADA stated the latest retail data covered 1,463 Regional Transport Offices across India during April.

Monthly Demand Slows After Financial Year Closing

March usually records stronger registrations because buyers complete purchases before yearly financial accounting closes across dealerships. However, April demand generally settles because discounts and stock clearance benefits reduce after March month end activity.

The April decline mainly reflected seasonal market movement instead of weaker customer interest toward electric two-wheelers. Yearly growth figures continued showing rising acceptance of electric scooters across Indian cities and regional markets.

Ola Electric Records Monthly Growth Amid Market Slowdown

Ola Electric remained the only major manufacturer posting monthly growth during April 2026 retail registrations nationwide. However, the company still recorded lower yearly sales compared to April 2025 registration figures across India.

Competition from traditional two-wheeler manufacturers continued affecting Ola Electric’s yearly market performance during recent months. Meanwhile, established brands expanded electric scooter portfolios and dealership presence across several important Indian markets.

Smaller Brands Continue Expanding Electric Presence

Several smaller electric vehicle manufacturers also posted strong yearly growth during April 2026 retail registrations nationwide. River Mobility recorded the highest yearly increase among smaller brands because sales expanded from a lower base.

BGauss Auto and Greaves Electric also reported yearly growth despite softer monthly registrations during April 2026. Therefore, competition within India’s electric scooter segment continued increasing across multiple price categories and customer groups.

Electric Market Share Remains Higher Than Last Year

Electric two-wheelers accounted for 7.8% of India’s total two-wheeler retail market during April 2026. March penetration remained higher at 9.8% because yearly closing demand lifted overall electric vehicle registrations significantly.

However, April 2025 electric vehicle penetration had remained lower at only 5.5% across Indian markets. Therefore, yearly market share growth continued showing stronger customer movement toward electric mobility options nationwide.

Industry experts continue monitoring government subsidy policies because scheme revisions directly affect electric vehicle purchase decisions. FADA also stated retail registration data provides clearer consumer demand information compared to wholesale dispatch figures.
