Revised Motor Vehicle Fines Effective from March 2025

The government has introduced new traffic rules with higher fines and stricter punishments. These rules are in effect from March 1, 2025. The goal is to make roads safer and reduce accidents.

People who break traffic rules will now have to pay more money as fines. In some cases, they may even go to jail. The new rules cover offences like drunken driving, helmet and seat belt violations, using a mobile while driving, and more. All drivers need to follow these rules to avoid penalties.

Higher Fines for Common Traffic Violations

Traffic rules have become stricter, and fines are now much higher. If you ride a two-wheeler without a helmet or with three people on it, you’ll have to pay Rs 1,000 instead of just Rs 100 earlier. Also, if you’re caught without a helmet, your license may be suspended for three months. If you don’t wear a seat belt, the fine is now Rs 1,000 instead of Rs 100. Using a mobile phone while driving will cost you Rs 5,000, which was just Rs 500 before.

Stronger Punishments for Serious Offences

Some traffic violations now come with much stricter punishments. Drunk driving will cost you Rs 10,000 and could even lead to six months in jail instead of the earlier Rs 1,000 - Rs 1,500 fine. If you repeat the offence, the fine goes up to Rs 15,000, and you might face two years in jail.

Not giving way to an emergency vehicle will now cost Rs 10,000 instead of Rs 1,000. Dangerous driving, speeding, and jumping a red light will now result in a Rs 5,000 fine instead of the earlier Rs 500.

The penalty is even tougher for juveniles (under 18) breaking traffic rules. They will face a Rs 25,000 fine, three years in jail, and a year's cancellation of their vehicle registration. Before, they only had to pay Rs 2,500.
