No Helmet, No Fuel Rule in Indore from 1st August

No Helmet, No Fuel Rule in Indore from 1st August

Starting August 1, two-wheeler riders in Indore will not get fuel if they’re not wearing helmets. The district administration has announced this strict rule to improve road safety. This move follows the orders of the Supreme Court’s Road Safety Committee.

Petrol pump operators have been clearly told to deny fuel to anyone on a two-wheeler i.e bikes and scooters without a helmet. The rule aims to create awareness and reduce traffic violations in the city. Let’s know more about this rule in detail.

Why the Rule Was Introduced

The rule comes after former Supreme Court judge Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre. He heads the Road Safety Committee, held a meeting with officials in Indore. He instructed that all two-wheeler riders must wear helmets, and passengers in cars should use seat belts.

Indore District Magistrate Ashish Singh immediately issued a strict order in line with these instructions. From August 1, petrol pumps must refuse fuel to two-wheeler riders without helmets. This step is meant to reduce road accidents and encourage safer driving.

The move also follows concerns raised by the Madhya Pradesh High Court. The court was unhappy with the poor traffic discipline in Indore and had asked for stronger actions to improve the situation.

Strict Penalties for Petrol Pumps

The order has legal backing under Section 163 of the Indian Civil Security Code 2023. Any petrol pump found violating the rule will face legal consequences. These may include:

  • Imprisonment of up to 1 year
  • A fine of up to Rs 5,000
  • Or both

So, petrol pump owners must be careful and follow the rule strictly. The district administration has also planned a campaign to spread awareness among the public.

Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Pradeep Sharma shared that about 32 lakh vehicles have been registered in Indore since 1950. Today, nearly 21 lakh vehicles are active on the roads, and 16 lakh of them are two-wheelers. This clearly shows how important helmet use is in Indore.

This rule is not new in India. Similar rules have been implemented earlier in cities like Bengaluru, Delhi, and Pune, where fuel was denied to riders without helmets. These cities saw some improvement in helmet usage.
