New High Beam Headlight Rules Proposed for Two-Wheelers in India

The government plans to introduce stricter headlight rules to reduce glare and improve road safety. The proposed changes could affect new two wheelers, cars, buses and other heavy vehicles.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has proposed changes to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules. The new safety rules could come into effect from April next year, subject to approval.

Bikes May Get Low Beam Automatic Headlamps

Under the proposed rules, automatic headlamp systems on new two wheelers may work only in low beam mode. This means the automatic system would keep the headlight on passing beam instead of switching to high beam.

However, the change would apply only to new two wheelers. Existing bikes already on the road would not face this requirement. The move aims to reduce unnecessary high beam use. In addition, it could help prevent glare for riders and drivers coming from the opposite direction.

High Beam Intensity May Also Drop

The government also plans to lower the maximum intensity allowed for high beam headlights.

Vehicle Type Current Limit Proposed Limit
Two wheelers 1.5 lakh cd 1 lakh cd
Four wheelers 2.25 lakh cd 1.5 lakh cd

The proposed rules could also set a limit on headlight colour temperature. The maximum proposed limit stands at 6,500 Kelvin (K). Higher colour temperatures can produce stronger white light and may increase glare for other road users. Therefore, the new limit could help improve visibility and reduce discomfort at night.

New Bikes and Cars May Get Alerts

Another proposed change could add an audio warning for high beam use in urban areas. The system may alert drivers when they manually switch to high beam at lower speeds. However, the warning may not activate above 60 kmph on highways. This approach could allow drivers to use high beam where they need better visibility on dark roads.

Heavy Vehicles May Get Reflective Tapes

In addition, buses and other heavy vehicles may need genuine reflective tapes. These tapes could make large vehicles easier to spot at night and during poor weather. Overall, the proposed changes focus on reducing glare and improving visibility. However, the final rules may change before the government implements them.
