KTM has been spotted testing the 390 SMC R on Indian roads, drawing attention from motorcycle followers nationwide. The model is linked to the 390 Enduro R and focuses on a different riding style. However, recent tax changes and KTM’s engine direction create doubts. Therefore, the test sighting alone does not confirm that the motorcycle will reach showrooms soon.

The KTM 390 SMC R shares its base structure and parts with the 390 Enduro R. However, the main difference comes from the wheel setup used. The bike runs on 17-inch alloy wheels at both ends instead of the Enduro’s larger wheels. Hence, this setup suits supermoto riding, which mixes road racing with dirt sections. In addition, suspension and frame parts remain mostly unchanged.
Despite testing activity, the KTM 390 SMC R faces challenges for an India launch. Under GST 2.0, motorcycles above 350cc attract a 40 percent tax rate. Therefore, pricing becomes difficult for performance-focused models. KTM is now adjusting its plans to avoid higher taxes. As a result, the current 399cc version is unlikely to be introduced locally.
KTM is preparing a new engine that will stay below the 350cc limit. This motor will be developed from the existing 399cc single cylinder unit. Hence, output is expected to remain close to 40 bhp. Performance figures should stay strong for its class. Moreover, the test bike seen in India could already be running this updated engine.
The brand plans to introduce the new 350cc engine on current models first. The Duke, Adventure, and Enduro ranges will get this motor before any new model launches. Therefore, the SMC R may arrive later, once the revised engine lineup is ready. Until then, KTM may continue selling the bike only in overseas markets.
If launched, the KTM SMC R could become India’s first dedicated supermoto motorcycle. This may help introduce the riding format locally. However, awareness about supermoto riding remains low among Indian buyers. Hence, sales numbers are expected to stay small. European and North American markets currently understand this segment better.
Alongside engine downsizing, KTM is also developing a new 500cc parallel-twin engine. This motor will sit above the single cylinder range. Moreover, it will help KTM compete with brands like Aprilia and BMW. Therefore, KTM aims to separate its future models clearly by engine size.
