Zomato Launches EV Rental Fleet in Delhi to Cut Emissions By 2030

Zomato has introduced a fleet of EVs on rent for its delivery partners in Delhi, marking an important move in sustainability. 300 electric two-wheelers will be introduced as part of this trial project. It seeks to lower the cost and facilitate the transition of delivery partners from fuel-powered bikes to environmentally friendly two-wheelers. Part of a Bigger Green Mission

This initiative is a key part of Zomato’s long-term climate goal to make 100% of its deliveries through EVs by 2030. Additionally, the company plans to become a net zero emissions business by 2033. It shows their dedication to completely removing the carbon it produces through its food ordering and delivery services. 
So far, Zomato has already added over 37,000 EV-based delivery partners to its team. These green deliveries have helped prevent nearly 4,900 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions in the last financial year. It is almost the same as planting 2.2 lakh trees.

Making EVs More Accessible for Riders

The initiative supports Zomato’s delivery partners who want to switch to electric bikes but find the upfront cost too high. With this rental option, riders can now get access to specially designed electric bikes at an affordable cost. On top of that, it reduces delivery partners' fuel expenses and increases their earnings. 

Real Impact on the Ground

For many delivery partners, this new rental fleet could be a game-changer. Saroj Raout, a Zomato delivery partner for the last two years, said, “Although I have been using my two-wheeler petrol bike to fulfill delivery orders, I have been wanting to switch to an EV for a while, knowing it’s sustainable for me financially and the planet at large. Now, with easy access to these affordable rental EVs, that’s finally a reality. It means I can reduce my running costs, potentially boost my earnings, and contribute to the planet.”

Support from Authorities and Future Expansion

Top Delhi Police officials, including Ajay Chaudhary, IPS, Special Commissioner of Police, were present when this initiative was introduced. He emphasised how crucial private businesses like Zomato are to lowering pollution in Delhi by taking such progressive measures.
This EV rental scheme is now limited to the Delhi-NCR area. However, depending on how successfully the trial operation goes, Zomato intends to expand its reach into more Indian cities. The program, according to the business, also helps the Delhi government achieve its objective of making the city India's EV capital.
