Ahmedabad-based electric two-wheeler startup Matter Motor has announced plans to expand its product lineup steadily. The company aims to enter five different two-wheeler segments over the next three to four years. This strategy will help Matter address a wider section of India’s electric mobility demand. Currently focused on electric motorcycles, the brand will move into electric scooters later. Hence, the expansion will happen in clearly planned phases.
Matter Motor’s present portfolio includes only the Matter Aera electric motorcycle. The Aera is positioned as India’s first electric bike with a four-speed manual gearbox. Priced at around Rs 1.8 lakh, the model targets riders seeking a familiar riding feel. However, the company plans to strengthen its motorcycle range first. Therefore, electric scooters will be introduced only after completing the motorcycle lineup.
Matter has outlined a five-segment expansion plan based on a shared technology platform. These segments include naked street motorcycles, another street bike category, adventure motorcycles, youth-focused bikes, and electric scooters. Hence, the company will rely on a common hardware, software, computing, and data structure. This approach is expected to support faster development and smoother scaling across segments.
Matter Motor Founder and CEO Mohal Lalbhai explained the company’s next steps clearly. "A 150cc equivalent model on the same platform is going to be our next immediate product. That is going to be followed by a 125cc equivalent and the performance variant. This will then be coupled with multiple different form factors on the same platform and the architecture," said Lalbhai.
He further added, "And eventually, once we are done with our entire motorcycling portfolio, that's when we are going to be using the same concept of AI-Defined Vehicles and look at how we bring in scooters. This is what our next 3-4 year roadmap looks like."
India’s electric motorcycle market is seeing growing activity from new and existing players. Ola Electric, Revolt, and Ultraviolette already have products in this space. However, more entries are expected soon. Ather Energy is developing a new electric motorcycle platform named Zenith. Moreover, legacy manufacturers such as Royal Enfield, through its Flying Flea brand, and Hero MotoCorp, in partnership with Zero Motorcycles, are preparing for electric motorcycle launches.
