BMW Bikes to Feature Camera and Radar Technology

The bike resembles a BMW K 1600 model, with cameras mounted on its mirrors.

As technology advances, bike makers add more electronic features to their products to improve safety. These features not only make the bike modern, but they are truly helpful for protection. 

BMW also plans to advance its bikes by adding safety features such as radar-based cruise control, blind-spot monitoring and smart ABS. BMW is taking this a step further by developing a new system that combines cameras and radars for its bikes.

BMW’s camera-based radar system for motorcycles

According to the patent, the bike (a variant of the K 1600 model) has a camera on each mirror. As a result, it can detect traffic coming from the opposite direction and road markings and signs. The system also controls the LED headlight of the bike so that it can lower the brightness of the part of the LED matrix beam that is shining on an approaching vehicle.

The goal of these features is to protect not only the rider on the bike but also the vehicle and its occupants. A similar feature is found on the new 2023 Kawasaki H2 SX, which has a single camera behind the fairing that can automatically lower the headlight brightness.
 

The patent applies to a BMW K 1600 touring bike. But it could also be used on other bikes, such as the R 1250 RT or the brand-new R 1300 GS expected to launch this year.
