Women-Led E-Bike Taxi Service Planned to Improve Tourist Travel in Delhi

The Delhi government is planning to introduce a women-driven e-bike taxi service designed especially for female passengers. The proposed scheme, called e-Bike Didi Yojana, will operate at popular tourist locations across Delhi. The goal is to offer safe, affordable, and environment-friendly short-distance travel where transport options are often limited.

Under the plan, electric bikes may be deployed near landmarks such as the Red Fort, Qutub Minar, Lotus Temple, Chandni Chowk, and Humayun's Tomb. These places attract heavy crowds, and visitors often struggle to find quick rides for short distances. Therefore, the service could make tourist travel smoother and more comfortable.

Opportunities for Women Riders

In addition, the scheme may create new job opportunities for women. Residents of Delhi aged between 18 and 40 could apply if they have a driving licence, even a learner’s licence. Selected applicants will receive training to operate electric bikes and assist tourists.

"The scheme is likely to be based on the concept of a private bike-taxi hailing service, but it could become transformative because it will serve a dual purpose," said an official. He further explained that the plan could improve women’s safety while also opening doors to employment in a field usually dominated by men.

Cleaner Transport and Better Visitor Experience

The government has chosen electric two-wheelers because they produce no tailpipe emissions and create less noise. As a result, they could help reduce congestion and pollution near crowded monuments. Officials believe the system may also shorten waiting times for visitors who currently depend on autos or walk long distances.

"An organised e-bike taxi network could reduce waiting times, ease congestion and lower emissions at the world's popular sites," said the official.

Implementation and Next Steps

The project will be handled by the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation. Once the policy receives approval, the agency will invite applications both online and offline. Initially, the service may start at a few locations and expand later based on demand and tourist feedback.

"After the department-level consultations are over, a draft will be prepared and put up before the competent authority for consideration and approval," said the official, adding that no deadline has been fixed yet.
